What is counselling?

Professional therapy and counselling is modern day’s scientifically proven elixir for one’s mental wellness. This therapy can help people experiencing emotional or behavioural problems or anxiety to regain mental stability. Also, it can help people overcome mental health disorder.

Therapy is also referred to as psychotherapy or talk therapy. Often times, therapy is used in combination with prescription medicine to treat a mental health disorder. Therapy usually improves the results one gets from the medicine.

Therapy is more than just talking about your problems. Therapy provides you with new insights to address situations that bother you. It can help you cope with feelings and situations. It can help overcome feelings of anger, fear, anxiety, shyness, and panic. It also can assist you with tools to help fight low self-esteem and depression.

If you are not sure if therapy and counselling are right for you, seek advice from your family doctor. We can then arrange for trained professionals for your aid. Our services are available through audio or video calls or home counselling as well.

We respect our clients’ privacy. Hence, confidentiality is maintained throughout.

What are the different types of counselling?

It is important to remember that mental illness is no different from physical illness. It can affect anyone and there should be no taboo attached. If left untreated, mental illness can and most likely will worsen over time, just like any physical illness.

The most prominent area is mental health counselling which addresses multiple types of depression like postpartum depression or a major depressive disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder or ADHD (attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder).

The other types of counselling are relationship counselling (usually understood as marital counselling, but can be applied to any relation), substance abuse counselling and educational or performance related counselling.

Please elaborate how a major illness in the family may lead to mental disorders.

Dealing with major illness of a loved one is a traumatic experience. This often takes a toll on the caregivers in the immediate family. Owing to the all-consuming major illness, very little attention is left for the caregivers. If the first signs are ignored and left untreated, this can manifest as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) or depression in the affected person, sometime after decades even.

At Carefirst, we offer the following counselling services by trained professionals:

  • Depression or social withdrawal triggered by life threatening illness
  • Helping caregiver cope with family member’s neurological or other life limiting impairments.
  • End of life and bereavement counselling

Can I get some counselling on what kind of home health care I need for my family and whether to buy or rent particular medical equipment?

Yes. We do provide counselling on inputs related to home healthcare packages, treatments and help you in taking home healthcare decisions and finalizing the right kind of medical equipment for your loved one’s care.

If required, our nursing coordinator will pay you a visit at your residence to survey the patient’s immediate surrounding and recommend correct home healthcare measures.
